25 families in the Los Arcos community, which is in the La Paz Centro Network, will benefit from new Rainbow Network houses in this project. Two weeks into the project a lot has already been accomplished. First, we held a meeting of staff and families who will be building houses. All of the contracts were signed and received by Rainbow Network staff. Then, we elected the housing committee to help oversee the project, outlined the self-construction requirements and expectations, and organized the families into three “working groups.”
The first “working group” now consists of 9 members and will work Monday and Tuesday of each week. The second includes 8 members and will work Wednesdays and Thursdays. Finally, Friday and Saturday shifts will be covered by the 8 members of group three. Also, it is necessary to supervise the materials stored for construction purposes and we devised a plan to make sure that this would be accomplished without too much hardship.
Next, the land was cleared of debris and prepared for construction through the efforts of volunteers from all 25 families. The final approval for construction has been received and the materials for the first four houses have been delivered. These materials include sand, gravel, cement, and rebar that will be used to construct the solid floors for the homes along with the cement bricks, wood, nails, and wire for construction of the walls. The walls have begun to climb from the dirt, several houses are 5 rows of cement block high already!
A partnership agreement has been made with the Tulsa Rotary club to drill a well in the community to provide safe, clean drinking water to the residents of these new homes. This is expected to be completed soon.
We’ll update you again soon on the progress of the housing project in Los Arcos.
